Soldotna Park Sold Privately to Neighbors

Posted on 0 comment

first_imgFacebookTwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享A parcel set aside for future park development has now been sold to private neighbors. Marcus and Lisa Guidry last night agreed to pay $30,000 for the 0.3 acre parcel on Riverview Avenue. Guidry: “We’re not going to do anything with it right now, we’re just going to enjoy the fairness the City gave us and we appreciate everyone’s support. We don’t have any intent to do anything with it at this point.” The Guidry’s request was put to the Soldotna City Council, who approved the sale after the parcel was withdrawn from public bid. Ultimately, the Guidrys and their neighbors were thrilled with the decision.center_img Councilors Meggean Bos and Pete Sprague expressed some concern; Sprague said he had no problem with the Guidrys and believed they would be good stewards, but he didn’t agree with taking the property out of the city auction. Sprague said the sale also didn’t classify as “negotiated,” since the price the Guidrys paid would have been the opening bid if the property went to auction. Cm. Sprague: “As far as public process, I think there needs to be some very valid, very strong reasons for sole source, and I didn’t necessarily see that in this case.”last_img read more

Tranquility the reward for road runners traffic torment

Posted on 0 comment

first_imgRoad Running The annual pilgrimage to the peace and quiet and fresh air at De La Salle College Bomana has been a feature of the Port Moresby road runners calendar for more than 30 years. So it was with the usual abundance of excitement that the hardy town throng set off for their countryside sojourn on Saturday afternoon. But the anticipated pain and sweat and grit and determination, which are part and parcel of the long and winding road to the top of Mount Eriama in the 7.5-kilometre race, came sooner than expected. Traffic snarls and bottle-necks are now part of the very slow journey involved in getting to this little piece of paradise. So it came to pass that almost half the field missed the 5.00 pm start. And then there was a battle finding it as in the 12 months since last time, the evergreen bush and weeds have invaded the pitch. But the show went on, as it always has, in the 40 unbroken years that Road Runners have been conducting events on the streets and by-ways of the National Capital District. Tranquillity and inner-peace were the rewards for those who endured the traffic woes. Though it was dry and warm it was not stinking hot and the recent rains have showered the landscape with all manner of delightful emerald hues. It was like something out of Sound of Music as the zephyrs caressed the tired and aching bodies and the hills came alive with the sound of road runners. The race was dominated, in fact book-ended, by a serene bevy of super-veterans (aged 50 to 59 years). James Gurumi won in 41 minutes and 58 seconds, with Eddie Joe runner-up in 42.42. The effervescent Vincent Ong came adorned in another dazzling multi-coloured outfit, which made him momentarily the target of ornithologists who were scouring the mountain for Kumuls. Simon Nutley looked to have Ong’s measure on the way up to the Eda Ranu facility, but on the way down all of Ong’s 50 shades of orange merged and he surged past the wilting Queenslander(65.59) to bag 19th place in 65.25. Other diehards to conquer the mountain as well as the traffic were Joe Ready 45.27, Ben Trengrove 46.04, Ed Wilkinson 46.36, Henry Horou 47.44, Jacob Sailas 48.14, Micks Eminem 48.16, Kisito Brian (first junior) 48.46, Ralph Christian 51.25, Junior Adman 51.25, Demetrius Austin51.59, Titus Tobia (third super-veteran) 53.15, Michael Sullivan (first ultra-veteran) 53.24, Mirzo Isoev 54.14, Terry Fisher (second ultra-veteran) 54.15, David Denniston 55.15 and Abel Wain 55.37. Road Runners will be back in town next weekend with the feature event the Downtown 10,000 starting at 5am (yes 5 o’clock in the morning, when it’s dark and cool) in Douglas Street, outside Kina Bank Tower. This is five laps of a 2km, winding and hilly circuit within the central business district. On Saturday at 5pm three events will start outside the Holiday Inn, Islander Drive, Waigani. Runners, walkers, joggers, movers and shakers of all standards are welcome. Entry is on-the-line.last_img read more

Ole Miss goes for length, athleticism in early signees

Posted on 0 comment

first_imgOXFORD — Rasheed Brooks is a “long, athletic wing,” Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy said. Terence Davis “is a big time athlete.” Donte Fitzpatrick’s “creativity with the ball will allow him to create action for himself as well as for his teammates.”Signing day press releases are notorious for the use of buzz words, especially when describing players who may be unfamiliar to most of the intended audience. Ole Miss signed, by all accounts, three very good players for the 2015-16 roster in the last week: Davis and Fitzpatrick are both top-150 guys that have played in or around Memphis, and Brooks is a top-20 junior college player. These are good additions to the roster, if they lack the name appeal of, say, Malik Newman (the Callaway guard, one of the top players in the country, will wait until the spring to make his college decision). But there’s a very clear theme to this year’s signing class, and it’s that these are guys who are going to have the ball in their hands.Beyond The Game: Malik Newman – Season 2 premiereFitzpatrick is a 6-foot-4 combo guard, Davis a 6-4 2-guard and Brooks a 6-6 wing. They’ll help to fill some of the attrition off this season’s roster, essentially replacing Jarvis Summers, Terence Smith and LaDarius White’s scholarship slots. What they do not do is help down low: Ole Miss is 1-1 this season, and a loss to Charleston Southern Friday can be traced back to a lack of interior toughness. M.J. Rhett, a one-year grad transfer, and Aaron Jones are both seniors, and Ole Miss is scheduled to bring back three post players. That’ll have to be a spring priority for Kennedy, who does have scholarships to use.Kennedy’s recruiting focus has shifted in recent seasons. He once favored athletic players like the group he just signed, but then tried the international route with former assistant Sergio Rouco’s connections. Rouco is gone, and Kennedy signed four upperclassmen last spring to try to quick-fix the roster. Now it appears he’s going back to the past, looking towards nearby Memphis and making a full effort with the state of Mississippi’s best.Part of that plan has worked before: Terrico White was rated only marginally better than Davis and Fitzpatrick, and the Memphian ended up spending time in the NBA. Martavious Newby has evolved into a useful defensive player. But Ole Miss was not able to land Johnny O’Bryant in 2011, and the top Mississippians since then have never really had Ole Miss on their radar.Newman does, and his signature this spring changes the direction of the program. It also elevates a good recruiting class into a great one. For now, though, Ole Miss will gladly take the athletes it already has committed.last_img read more
